Attack of the emerald ash borer
The emerald ash borer is an invasive species of beetle originating from north-east Asia. Scientists believe that in 2002, the borer made its way to the United States through lumber shipments where it has since spread across the country. Of the affected areas, Washington D.C.’s Roosevelt Island, among other important forests, runs the risk of losing the ecologically important ash tree.
