Slipping through our fingers: The future of water

This school year, we asked many of our contributors to focus on the topic of water in their storytelling.

Water is a vital component not just to the lives of humans, but to the daily survival of all plant and animal life across the planet.

Which means that the threats to water are threats to all of us.

In these stories, students address the issues surrounding water; its cleanliness, accessibility, and its temperature among other pressing considerations. Some stories investigate the causes for these issues and others seek to highlight the actionable steps that can be taken to address them.

The agricultural need for water to provide society with a source of food threatens the longevity of traditional water sources. Rising ocean temperatures and subsequent acidification is disrupting marine life as we speak. And access to potable water continues to be an unevenly distributed right that leaves many in thirst.

In honor of World Water Day on March 22nd, we’ll be featuring one of our best water stories each day for the next 10 days. Check back here to catch up on the stories that tackle these issues, meet the characters at the heart of the stories, and learn what measures are being taken to ensure a clean and healthy future for water.
