Bakio is a small coastal town in the Basque Country known for its beaches and surf. But heavy rains periodically turn its local river into a threat, sending floodwaters through the streets, a problem that climate change is expected to make worse. Local and regional governments are now developing a plan to transform the riverbanks into 22 acres of public green space that, during major storms, would intentionally flood to absorb water and protect homes. A similar model has already worked in the Netherlands. Watch the video to learn how it would work in Bakio.
