Students from 16 universities across North America competed in the EcoCar challenge to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles by reducing fuel consumption and emissions while still maintaining performance. Students worked on this project for three years, and in the end created clean energy vehicles. The Virginia Tech team was announced the winner of this competition on June 16, 2011. Ohio State and University of Waterloo finished second and third respectively.
