In our new series of science Policy Perspectives for Planet Forward, contributing writers from George Washington University’s Science Communication class share their research and add context to scientific findings related to environmental issues ranging from fungal pathogens killing amphibians to the effects of pesticides on bee populations. Our contributors learned that much more is needed than a concise explanation of how readers can understand, and likely make decisions about, government or institutional policies. Reporting on public issues at the intersection of science requires elements of storytelling, critical analysis, and research that can shape practical action toward solving some of the world’s biggest challenges.
