Apply for the Planet Forward Experiential Learning Award

Do you have a project idea that requires travel funding?

Eligible student must be currently enrolled at a Planet Forward Pillar School to apply for a travel award in order to produce a story for publication on Planet Forward.

Awards can range from between $500 and $4000 to cover travel and production expenses. If approved, you will also receive hands-on mentorship and guidance from Planet Forward’s editorial team. In order to apply, please complete the form below.

Projects receive awards on a case by case basis. Projects may be awarded or denied for any reason.

Story Proposal Memo (500 words)(Required)

Provide a written pitch in paragraph form that covers the following bullet points: (1) Identify an environmental problem and solution. (2) Include at least one primary source data point that reveals the seriousness of this problem. (3) Include a breakdown of who the characters/sources are. (4) Include a brief account of any progress regarding reaching out to the necessary interviewees/any issues regarding access to them. (5) Describe the format/style/medium(s) you wish to tell the story through and why that choice makes sense for your topic (e.g. text, multi-media, video, podcast). (6) Describe the timeliness and newsworthiness of this story and its relevance to various audiences.

Budget Outline(Required)

Max. file size: 50 MB.

Provide an itemized budget in an excel spreadsheet that lists all production and travel costs that you are asking funding for.

Timeline of Production(Required)

Max. file size: 50 MB.

Provide a list of dates that captures when you plan on traveling, when you will complete various important parts of the story’s production, when you will travel home, and when you will have the story completed by.

Literature Review(Required)

Max. file size: 50 MB.

Outline what research you have already done into your topic as well as background information on major sources/characters in your story.

Safety Outline(Required)

Max. file size: 50 MB.

Describe what threats to your personal safety you may face during the production of this story and how you will address each one in specific actions. No threat is too small to consider. How will you address the average daily temperature of the location you wish to travel to? Where is the closest hospital to your story’s location? Will you have cell phone service in the field?

Story Ethic and Disclosure(Required)

Do you have any conflicts of interest in telling this story? What kind of ethical issues may arise from its production? How will you address those issues?

Provide at least three examples of multimedia storytelling you’ve done in the past along with explanatory captions if necessary.
