Nuclear power will never be safe until we have a means of dealing with radioactive waste RESPONSIBLY. Civilizations do not last forever. Our great great grandchildren may not understand the danger of ‘used’ plutonium. If they open a ‘stockpile of the ancients’, they could well destroy the entire ecosphere. And THAT would be OUR FAULT.

Who wants to drive less? Why not simply replace the ICE with an electric motor using batteries recharged by one of the many circuits and devices similar to Bedini’s? Of course, govt does not wish such technology to get out, despite lip service to the contrary. The real problem today? An obstructive govt under the control of the Financial/Industrial leaders of the world instead of the People.
Who woulda thunk? The Conspiracy Nuts were right all along!

But I DO have one question for Bill Nye. Why are we so worried about CO2 levels when OXYGEN levels are dropping so precipitously? .003% of CO2 is insignificant compared to a drop from 21% to 18% and in some areas even as low as 15%. And that’s only over a 30 year period.
Where’s all the concern for THAT?

Larry,
Good point on nuclear power. “Responsible” is the key term. The accidents and near accidents that have occurred at nuclear sites over the past 50 years demonstrate the destructive potential of such technology. The waste from the sites, meanwhile, accumulated to the point where our government elected to store them in remote caves (see Yucca Mountain). Simply put, nuclear poses immense risks to humans.
Thanks for all the comments!

Larry and Joel,
Are you kidding me with some of the stuff you are saying…
Sure we should be responsible with nuclear power but that can be said about every industry and power generation method. Larry if our great great grandchildren do not know the dangers of plutonium then you are implying that either the movie idiocracy came true, that man kind took steps backwards in knowledge, or that your comment is based on fear.
Joel, how many people have died and how much environmental damage has been caused by oil spills, refinery explosions, coal mine collapses, dam failures, should I keep going?….. It is easy to state the “destructive potential” of nuclear because a fraction of the people actually understand it and that leads to unreasonable fear. Sure the japan nuclear incident was bad. But it was a 9.0 earthquake and a 30-ft tsunami hitting an old facility. What if a 9.0 occurred near the hoover dam causing it to fail? how many would die? Should we close the dam and drain the reservoir? What about NY city? What if a 9.0 hit there and was followed by a 30-ft tsunami at rush hour? How many thousands could die? Should we evacuate all coastal cities and anywhere with even the most insignificant possibility of an earthquake, tornado, natural disaster? There has to be reasonable actions taken. You cant power the US or the world with solar, wind, and geothermal. And considering the negative environmental and safety issues with other power generation technologies nuclear doesn’t look so bad assuming it is used “responsibly.”

There was nothing wrong with yucca mountain, except that the president (who knows nothing about nuclear power) got a say in it. Bad things are transported all day every day throughout the US, but when it is related to anything nuclear all hell breaks loose and the NIMBY and BANANA people start screaming.
