Want to Drive an Electric Car Incognito?

by MPGomatic | 3:03 pm January 10th, 2011 | 5 Comments »

Why stick out if you’d rather blend in? Electric cars don’t have to look any different from conventional cars.

Ford unveiled the 2012 Focus Electric Car at simultaneous events in Las Vegas and NYC. The Focus Electric looks much like the gasoline powered 2012 Focus, with the most notable exterior changes being a different grille and (ta da!) no tailpipe.

Take off the E-lectric badges and you have the stealthiest electric car … drive softly and carry a big battery!

  1. Great, these cars will help make the transition to a new energy paradigm. Though I think light rail and people living downtown is part of the solution not using a car constantly and not having to shop at a Wal Mart the slave labor company of the 21st century.

  2. Great looking, faster charging than the leaf; but not in the same class as the Volt. Any trip longer than 50 miles each way requires a 4 hour charge; totally impractical. Throw in a small motor for charging and the long haul or you’re wasting your time and money, Ford.

  3. No thanks.

I much rather drive a car with a Scuderi Engine and boast about it.
I like to take long drives.
I don’t want to worry about where, and how long my next charge will be.

If the US Government is pushing for batteries, and EV’s then you know that is the wrong technology.

Adapt a hybrid approach using a clean burning, fuel efficient internal combustion engine.
    Thats the right Technology.

25 to 30 years from now, when I’m pushing up daisy’s they just might have a new battery technology to go the distance, but not NOW.

  4. I must be missing some concept here??? Prius has been getting over 48 mpg average for 11 years and is comfortable and not outlandishly expensive. Talked to my Toyota dealer last week and he said the Prius for 2012 will probably be a plug in for trips under about 50 miles and use existing proven Prius techniques for longer trips. The 2011 Prius gets over 50 mpg.

I thought the Prius would be too tiny and cramped. I’m a little chubby guy, 5’6″ and 240 pounds. My wife is 5’2″ and about 105 pounds.
We both find it very comfortable, good acceleration, good engineering all around.

Why are car companies bragging about their cars getting an advertised 40 mpg??? I’m waiting for the newer Prius about Sept I think. Actually, I may keep my 2008 because it is like new. Again, good engineering.

BUT, I would realy really prefer to buy USA. Why can’t Ford make something as good as a 3 year old car I already have???

  5. If you don’t need the extra range EV’s are a better answer since they use no gas or oil and they should need almost no maintenance. You simply can’t beat that.
