Verdant Power is turning Manhattan’s East River into a testing ground for a hydro electricity project that could show the world that you don’t need dams or raging rivers to create an urban source of hydro power.
The company uses underwater turbines to to generate energy from the natural water currents of rivers, tides, and manmade channels. It also develops renewable energy projects in the United States, Canada, and internationally.

These turbines are an extension of conventional thinking and not well suited for the tide power environment. By concentrating on profile and torque it is posable to produce 12 times the power per turbine, while still not effecting marine life. This can be achieved with only 3 major moving parts.
The siting of these stand up horizontal axis turbines is determined by the continuous water depth which allows marine traffic draft and a large enough disc area to be accommodated at lowest tide height.
