The up-front cost is, as usual, the killer. The cost of the upgrade plus the cost of the solar installation is more than the average consumer can afford. With a hefty government subsidy this would be available to more vehicle owners. This would be a win-win for our nation. We would be less dependent on foreign oil, there would be less drain on the existing energy infrastructure and, if all or most of the necessary technology is made in America, there would be an increase in the number of good-paying jobs.
