Earth Day is a time to celebrate and enjoy a whole array of legendary bands, like the Roots, Sting, Jimmy Cliff, and many more. It is also a day specifically dedicated to shining a light on the climate change debate.

For some though, the whole orchestra of live musical performances and dancing in the sunshine doesn’t do much to actually help the cause or add anything to the debate. On the other hand, some were hopeful for the future and for the next generation of youth.

Whether a cynic or a supporter of Earth Day, yesterday’s event on the National Mall at least brought thousands together. This video I shot for the Washington Post shows some of the scenes and moments, as well as some of the opinions voiced yesterday.

Also, check out a photo gallery with some of the photographs shot by staffers from the Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/gallery/2010/04/25/GA2010042502728.html?sid=ST2010042503534

  1. What happens to alternate energy??? Investors had been saying that alternate energy is not competitive all along. The rest of you seems to stand by and do nothing. Solar energy will require a lot of aluminium especially in the solar thermal technologies not photovoltaics that continue to grab the most attention. Now when aluminmium is mentioned, everyone thought Oh aluminium is so energy intensive to make… NO!! At firtst, yes, but in the long run , always NO every time it is recycled. Aluminium is what mirrors is made of . You can use silver but it is finite in supplies.. Aluminium is most plentiful metal resource in the world not iron.. ALUMINIUM! Why aluminium? You can concentrate sunlight with mrrors made of aluminium and you will need a lot of them to become energy independent. We can use solar energy to get hydrocarbons out of tar sands and shale oil . We are not thinking about that… There is so many solar thermal applications that can help us regain our energy indpendence.. First, we must invest … We cannot keep holding oil stocks… Unless the oil companies decide to use aluminium to create all kinds of energy we know we can do.. then hold oil stocks.. It will be less profitable , but we will regain our energy independence. Will oil investors allow managements take risks ?/ Greed !!!
