Carleton College has installed two wind turbines in order to reduce our carbon footprint. Our second turbine, which is connected directly our the campus power grid, will supply 25-30% of our electricity needs and reduce our carbon footprint by 10%. In addition, we are trying to make our buildings more energy efficient by performing energy audits with our local energy company. These two projects are just the beginning for Carleton College’s plan to become carbon neutral by 2050 as outlined by our Carbon Action Plan.

Our best wishes for success in this video competition go out to our friends at Carleton College. Your successes in sustainability should make you proud. We at William Paterson University voted for your video, and we would welcome your votes too. (By the way, we are not in the same competitive grouping.)
Good luck!

Good luck, Carleton! I drove out by your wind turbines when I visited our son at Carleton in late January. I loved watching them turn in the wind. I love knowing how much energy they’re providing to Carleton. Installation art with a purpose!

Thanks Robin! They are pretty awesome to see, when I first arrived to Carleton and saw them I could not believe how tall they were! Thank for the support!

Best luck Carleton! The two turbines also demonstrate best practices for Distributed Wind Electric Generation. The first in putting a big rotor span turbine on a medium wind resource site near electric load. The second by interconnecting on campus ‘behind the utility meter’.
Thanks to Carleton and Martha Larson for hosting our recent tour of Sustainability projects with our Rotary Group Study Exchange from Brazil.
We also saw the Weitz Creativity Center which reused our old Northfield Middle School building near campus and created an outstanding campus/community asset. We enjoyed a fresh lunch and talk with Bon Appetit about sustainable foods provided and local foods support.

A vote for Carleton acknowledges the foresighted student initiative and the thorough planning by students, faculty, and staff that lead to the first wind turbine, as well as the commitment to the climate action plan that Carleton is implementing with its second wind turbine and other significant steps toward a carbon-neutral campus.

My vote goes to Carleton for innovative work within a small rural town context. Not easy, but Carleton has done it!
