Revamping Recycling!

Recycling used to just make you think of committed greenies, but now it’s more common place and widely accepted.  So, how can we take recycling to the next level?  How about some green…cash?

This week we feature Planet Forward innovators who are developing new and unique ways to recycle and are taking their green efforts a step further!

Last night on Bloomberg West, we introduced you to EcoATM.  With people now getting new cell phones more and more frequently, the creators of EcoATM want to find a way to make sure those old phones don’t end up in landfills.  And there’s another perk–you can get cash for your old devices!

What do you think of this idea?  How can we encourage more people to recycle?  If you think you have a solution, let us know and submit your idea to Planet Forward today!

  1. I am really disturbed about remodelers destroying and recycling perfectly good sliding glass doors simply because they are single pane and energy inefficient . The old slidiing glass doors in good condition can be reused as components for building greenhouses. All you need to do is plop them down the appropriate wood frame work you make. you got yourself a neat greenhouse on the cheap. Or you can use them as solar heat collectors to heat and circulate heated air into your house from outdoors. I just dont understand why remodelers just toss them into the trash bin and shatter the glasss then recover the extruded aluminium frames for recycling . Those sliding glass doors comes in two sections one rolling and another in fixed position that can be removed after unscrewing the retaining brackets.. They are more valuable as reusables than recyclables. I have trouble locating where remodelers are and asking them to remember to save those sliding glass doors for resales instead of shattering them and recovering only a couple bucks worth of aluminium. They are worth $50-$100 as reused glass sections that can be turned into great solar collectors that can deliver 10-25,000 BTUs worth of heat into your house!! Typical wall heaters deliver as much BTUs… Remember, you dont have to turn off solar collectors as sunlight is free and they can be left turned on non stop… Big difference to remember by!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All you need is 10 watt fan to keep solar heated air circulating that can be powered with a solar panel . Why is it that everyone is so focused on photovoltaics while great stuff can be found and reused as ultra cheap solar home heaters for people on limited budgets!!!!! Havent you read about people not being able to pay for heat????? Lets start a campaign telling remodelers to stop shattering perfectly good old single pane slliding glass doors for a couple of bucks from the aluminium itself alone!!

  2. That sounds like a great idea Gumby! Why don’t you submit it as an idea to the site?
